What you will learn

Identify the legal requirements and responsibilities relating to the use, selection, and maintenance of abrasive wheels under Irish health and safety legislation.

Recognise the various types of abrasive wheels and their components, including flanges, blotters, guards, and dressing tools, and understand their correct applications.

Select the appropriate wheel for a given task, taking into account material type, wheel specification, speed rating, and compatibility with the machine.

Inspect, handle, and store abrasive wheels safely, ensuring that defects and damage are identified and dealt with before use.

Mount and balance abrasive wheels correctly, following manufacturer instructions and using appropriate tools and PPE.

Apply safe operating procedures when using abrasive wheels, including pre-use checks, guarding requirements, and actions to take in case of malfunction or emergency.

Demonstrate the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) specific to abrasive wheel operations, explaining the reasons for each item’s use and limitations.

Identify common hazards and control measures associated with abrasive wheel operations, including risks of wheel burst, flying particles, noise, vibration, and ergonomic strain.
